Throughout your Part C write-up you will be analysing your three historical representations via your interpretation of which representation you think is ‘best’. In order to assess the best-ness of the representation you must assess the accuracycomprehensiveness and objectivity. The following headings will provide you with some guidance in regards to what you should consider when analysing.

Accuracy is potentially the easiest methodology to understand, yet the hardest to apply. Simply put, this means “How correct is the information presented?”. However, when assessing for accuracy you need to draw on your pool of own knowledge.  Your foundation of knowledge regarding Civil Rights and mid-20th Century American History should have been built through your progress in the parts A and B of your controlled assessment. Via this basis you must question whether it is a complete or partial representation of history. Through the use of carefully chosen parts of the representations you also need to assess what the sources do not tell you.

Objectivity is assessing to what degree you believe the historical representation to be fair and balanced. In order to provide that assessment you need to fundamentally understand what is meant by fair and balanced. Is the article trying to fulfil an agenda? Are they trying to represent one-side of the argument, and dismiss the other? Does it provide a bias? Was this representation created with the benefit of being able to assess a multitude of different views on the events in question?

A simpler way to approach comprehensiveness is to think of it as ‘completeness‘. You need to question the representation and interrogate as to what you can learn from the source, whether it gives you a comprehensive or limited overview of the historical event; in this case Civil Rights. Furthermore, you need to consider whether it provides a balanced and complete representation of the period itself.
